I know that there exists an OpenGL wrapper for the ATi line to be able to run the nVidia Fairy demo. Does such a wrapper exist for DirectX?
It was my plan when HL2 came out I would buy an ATi card, but now I'm not so sure. I could buy a GFFX card and don't care about the lesser quality, but then nVidia will get away with this PR stunt. I would really like to play this game, but I'm more hooked on the ATi 9800pro.

[EDIT]
That won't help anyway as it's the program itself that does the GF4/FX checking.
