I'm giving the demo a tryout and am liking it a lot right now, but I'm having a major issue.
Even on the lowest possible graphics settings I'm getting ~3-10fps.
I tried the demo update and that didn't help at all (though I didn't think it would as I don't have a GF 6xxx series gfx card.)
System specs are as follows
Intel Core 2 Duo @ 3.15ghz (450
2gb DDR2 900
8800GTS 320 (560core/850mem)
750gb SATA 3.0 HDD

I just don't get it. I can play crysis @ a higher framerate then this demo, but I'm not even going to consider purchasing it if I can't get it to run any faster

Try updating your video drivers as described here:

Even if you already have the latest there might be some remains of a previous version causing problems which is why I recommend uninstalling your video drivers and rebooting before installing reinstalling new ones.

My drivers are current (181.22's) and I use guru3d's driver sweeper in safe mode before I update my graphics drivers so there should be no remnants of any old ones.

Soon I'll be formatting my machine and I'll do a virgin install of the 181.22 drivers and see if the demo still has problems. I really like the demo and would like to purchase the game, but if i'm only going to get 4-5fps then the $20 just isn't worth it to me. so I'd like to get the problem nailed before buying

Please let me know if that helps.  Also try changing your resolution and windows/full screen mode as described in your BridgeItOptions.txt:
